Setup & Installation: Extender Setup
- Setup the MX1200 using WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)
- Ensure that your router is on, online and broadcasting. Set the On/Off switch on the MX1200 to the On position and plug it into an electrical outlet in the same room as the router. This is solely for setup, you will move it to its optimal location later on.
- Once the MX1200’s Too Close and Too Far red lights are flashing simultaneously (this can take up to 35 seconds) you can then go ahead and press the WPS button on your router, this is generally located on the back or side of the unit.
- Press the WPS button on the MX1200 for at least one second.
- Wait until one of the MX1200’s range lights are solidly lit. That should indicate a solid bond with the router.
- Move the MX1200 to the room you’d like to ideally like to extend from and plug into an electrical outlet, give the unit about 20 seconds to power up and sync with the router, the light panel should indicate if you are much too close, too close, much too far, a bit too far or in a good location. After a bit of trial and error, you should be able to find the sweet spot where the green LED is solidly lit.
- Keep in mind, the MX1200 can only extend one band at a time, 2.5GHz or 5GHz. 2.4GHz in generally a good option in a larger home with 5GHz being ideal for HDTV streaming and gaming, assuming the end devices have the capability to see the 5GHz band.
- The tradeoffs are that 2.4GHz networks typically have a further reach at diminished speeds whereas 5GHz bands operate at shorter ranges at significantly faster speeds.
- Once the MX1200 is in the ideal location, lit solidly green and on the ideal band for your home and devices, go ahead and turn the wireless feature on your phone, tablet or laptop and browse the available networks.
- If your router’s network is named MOTO1234 for the 2.4 GHz band, the now extended network via the MX1200 will appear as MOTO1234-EXT and if the 5GHz network is named MOTO1234-5G, the now extended network via the MX1200 will appear as MOTO1234-5G-EXT5G.
- Keeping in mind the device can only extend one band at a time. If your 2.4GHz band is being extended, don’t expect to see anything ending in 5G-EXT5G.
- Select your extended network and enter the wireless password/key. The wireless password/key is the same as what you use to get onto your router’s networks already, which is either the default on the bottom of the router on the sticker or a personal password if you changed it any point.
- Navigate to MX1200 WiFi Range Extender: Personalization where we will cover how to change the extended network’s name and login credentials if need be.
- Setup the MX1200 without using WPS
- If your router doesn’t have a WPS button or if the WPS setup failed, you can try a manual setup.
- A Setup Device is required for the manual setup, a device like a computer or a laptop which can be wired via Ethernet or a laptop, tablet or smartphone with a wireless connection and an internet browser.
- Wired setup is strongly encouraged in this method
- Make sure that your Setup Device in turned on but not connected to the internet by disconnecting the Ethernet cable or turning off the WiFi connection.
- Set the On/Off switch on the MX1200 to the On position and plug it into an electrical outlet in the same room as the router. This is solely for setup, you will move it to its optimal location later on.
- Once the MX1200’s Too Close and Too Far red lights are flashing simultaneously (this can take up to 35 seconds) go ahead and connect your Setup Device to the MX1200 with an Ethernet cable if your Setup Device has that port with the included cable.
- If you want to connect your Setup Device to the MX1200 wirelessly, for look for MOTO-EXT or MOTO-EX5G in your list of available wireless networks on your Setup Device.
- The browser on your Setup Device may automatically open to the WiFi Extender Login page. If not, open a browser window on your Setup Device and navigate to SetupExtender.net and press enter.
- You may land on a splash page when you press enter on SetupExtender.net if your Setup Device is connected via any of the Red methods if so, make sure you are connected to the MX1200 with your Setup Device (listed here as Your Device, Your Phone, Your Ethernet-capable device) via a Green method:
- The login password for the setup page is motorola.
- This is the Quick Setup Click the Start button at the bottom of the page.
- You should see a list of available wireless networks displayed. Select your router’s wireless network, i.e., the network you are looking to extend.
- This may be named MOTO1234 or MOTO1234-5G (depending on which band you’ve set the MX1200 to extend) or something familiar you may have renamed your networks, such as Smith Residence or Smith Residence-5G.
- Enter the wireless password/key for the router’s wireless network and click Finish.
- The MX1200 lights will flash and after about 15 seconds you will get a Congratulations prompt in your browser, click ok as setup was successful.
- Move the MX1200 to the room you’d like to ideally like to extend from and plug into an electrical outlet, give the unit about 20 seconds to power up and sync with the router, the light panel should indicate if you are much too close, too close, much too far, a bit too far or in a good location.
