MX1200 Dropping Connection with BT Smart Hub 6

Troubleshooting the Motorola MX1200 WiFi Range Extender dropping wireless connection with BT Smart Hub 6
(UK’s WiFi Router):

Follow the suggestions below to resolve this issue.

Change the wifi channel & wireless network name/SSID on your BT Smart Hub 6 router

WiFi channels overlap with nearby channels, causing interference and may be the reason your MX1200 is dropping the connection.

*Nearby channels can include baby monitors, Bluetooth devices, remote control toys, wireless printers, etc.

HOW TO CHANGE WIFI CHANNEL and NAME:

  1. Open a new web browser on a device connected to your Hub and type:
    192.168.1.254 in the address bar (this will open the Hub Manager)
  2. Click Advanced Settings
  3. Click Wireless
  4. Enter the admin password (Unless you changed it, you’ll find the default password on the Hub settings card on the back of your Hub).  Otherwise, enter the admin password you selected.
  5. To choose a specific wireless channel, you need to split your wireless bands.
  6. Change the separate bands switch to ON.
  7. By splitting your network, you will create a second visible network name for the 5GHz band.  The new network name will have a “ -5 “ to show it’s for the 5GHz band.

  8. Click on the “Wireless Channel” box for the wireless band you want to change:

  9. Now select the wireless channel you want to use, then click Set:
    (You may need to try different channels until you find the one that works best on your network)4.jpg.

  10. When you are done making changes, click Save:

After you save changes, you will be prompted that as your wireless network name has changed, you may need to reconnect devices to the new network name.
 
*We recommend that you power off/power back on any devices that you connect to the BT Hub 6 with.  When the device powers back on, you will need to connect to the new wireless network name you created.

Power off/power back on (reboot) your BT Hub router.

Change SSID (network name) on the MX1200 to match the Network name for your BT Hub 6:

We recommend that you also rename the SSID on the MX1200 to match the SSID (wireless network name) on your BT Hub router.

HOW TO CHANGE WIRELESS NAME FOR THE MX1200:
If you already changed the name of the MX1200 to match the Router, you can connect directly to the MX1200 to check if the settings are correct:  (connect via Ethernet cable to a laptop or a desktop computer)
Open your web browser and type in: http://SetupExtender.net

  1. Enter motorola for the login
    This will bring you into the MX1200 GUI.
  2. Click Advanced > Extended Network
  3. Select and delete the old Wireless Network/SSID. Now type in what you would like the new Wireless Network/SSID name to be. We recommend that you use the exact name you used for your BT Hub router.
     
    Example: If you named your BT Hub’s Wireless network/SSID name to:   BTHub6-ABCD
    Type in BTHub6-ABCD for the MX1200 Wireless Network/SSID new name.

  4. Do the same for the 5 GHz Band Settings > Wireless Network/SSID. We recommend that you use the same name as your BT Hub’s 5 GHz Wireless Network/SSID setting.

    If you want the MX1200 to connect to the BT Hub using 5 GHz band, you have to slide the Host button from 2.4 GHz to 5GHz on the MX1200 unit next to the WPS button. The unit will configure to use 5GHz after 30-35 seconds. The setup should the same way for 2.4GHz. See picture and the link to MX1200 Quick Start.

  5. After you have made the changes, click Apply.
  6. Reboot the MX1200 so it will now use whatever channel your BT Hub router is now using.
    (Power off the MX1200, then power back on to reboot it)
  7. Lastly, do the following for any devices that are connected to your BT Hub router and MX1200 wifi range extender:

     

           iPhone, iPad:

    • Forget the Wi-Fi Network Name on your Apple device
      You should “forget” the previous wireless connection you were connected to. Smart phones remember settings, so it’s best to have a fresh start:

      Click Settings > Wi-Fi
      Click your Network Name
      Enter your passcode if prompted
      Click “Forget This Network” then click "Forget" when prompted.

      We recommend restarting your device before connecting to your new WIFI network name. 

      When your device powers back on, go into Settings > Wi-Fi to select the new Network Name to connect.



      Android Smart Phone:

      Forget the Wi-Fi Network Name on your Android/Samsung device
      You should “forget” the previous wireless connection you were connected to.  Smart phones remember settings, so it’s best to have a fresh start:

      From the Home screen, click the Settings app > Connections >Wi-Fi
       
      Click on your current network name

      Click “Forget”

      We recommend restarting your device before connecting to your new WIFI network name. 

      When your device powers back on, you will need to select the new Network Name to connect.
