Some people feel they achieve a degree of added security by hiding their wireless network name (or SSID). It is true that neighbors can't casually identify a hidden network. For some, that may be a sufficient reason to hide the name. However, you should know that hackers or others who wish to intrude can attack a network with a hidden name just as easily as a network where the name is broadcast.

Note: Before you hide your network name, you should be aware that you will need to build profiles manually on all your devices that connect to the wireless network. This can be a laborious process.

Here are steps to hide your wireless network name, and to configure your client devices to work with your hidden network:

  1. Open a web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari etc.)
  2. Type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of your browser.
  3. On the login page, enter the Username admin and Password motorola , then click the Login button.
    1. This will bring you to the Basic Status and Settings page. Click the Advanced button in the upper right.
    2. This will bring you to the Status à Software page.
    3. Hover over the Wireless menu item, and select the Advanced submenu.
    4. Find the line that says “Hide SSID (Closed Network)” and change the dropdown to say “Enabled”. Click Save on the same row on the right hand side.
    5. Your wireless network has now been hidden. Your devices will need to be manually configured to look for the hidden SSID.
      • With Apple mobile devices including iPhone, iPad and iPod, go to Settings, go to Wi-Fi, select "Other" in the WiFi SSID list and manually enter the SSID and the WPA2 key. (please see attachment, with iPhone5)
      • With Android devices, go to "Apps", go to “Settings”, “Wi-Fi”, look for three vertical dots in the top right corner (for Samsung, it may say "More") and find "Add Wi-Fi network", then enter your hidden SSID’s information manually. (please see attachment, with Samsung Galaxy )
      • For a MAC OS X system (Apple computer), click on the wireless icon in the top right hand corner, select "Join Other Network", then enter the Network Name, then the security type, and then the wireless password.
      • For a Windows system on a PC, right click the Network icon on the lower right hand corner of the task bar, then select Open Network and Sharing Center. Click on Set Up a New Connection or Network. Click on Manually connect to a wireless network, then enter the Network Name, then enter the password.
